A ripper is a hostile mob that spawns in illager assaults. It attacks players, adult villagers, wandering traders and iron golems by biting at them. They come in different sizes that have different stats.
Rippers spawn as part of an illager assault if the target player has 2x the configured threshold. They spawn in packs of 5 with 12 being the maximum amount that spawns as part of an assault.
Rippers will spawn in raids if at least one of the players participating in it has high enough Soul Energy.
They spawn in the same waves as pikers.
Rippers are hostile toward players, iron golems, adult villagers and wandering traders within a 32-block radius.
Much like wolves, they attack by leaping and biting at their target.
When not aggressive, rippers will follow any nearby illager, that's not a tormentor, much like preachers.
Rippers do not attack pillagers who shoot at them by accident, and do not attack evokers when evoker fangs accidentally hit them. When a ripper gets shot by a mob that battles with a projectile while it is attacking the player, the ripper first attempts to kill who shot it, then goes back to attacking the player once the deed is done.
Any ripper can join a patrol if sufficiently near a patrol captain.
Much like zombies on hard difficulty, rippers have a small chance of summoning another ripper when damaged by their target.
Rippers are based on the war dogs used in the Spanish conquests of America.
The war dogs are stated to be armored and primarily composed of the Spanish Mastiff breed which is what the ripper's texture is based on.
