The crone is a hostile mini-boss mob that uses brews in combat, both in the form of magical weapons as splash or gas brews and in the form of drinkable brews for defense.
Crones are spawned when a player interacts with an active crystal ball found within blighted shacks. An active crystal ball emits purple particles when it's active. When spawned, the crystal ball becomes inert and is unable to spawn a crone. They will spawn nearby the crystal ball.
Blighted Shacks can be found in swamp and taiga biomes.
When spawned, a crone will have a custom name that appear on their boss bar and above their heads. The name is purely cosmetic.
Crones will always drop their hat upon death.
They have a similar loot table as vanilla witches, but with greater quantity.
99 experience is dropped when kill credit is given to the player.
Crones have a chance of dropping the brew they were drinking before death.
Crones will also drop a Treasure Pouch.
A crone is neither an illager nor a villager. A crone cannot use housing or the equipment in their shacks, but they can open doors. Crones are peaceful toward villagers and wandering traders when not participating in raids, although their potions can hit one by accident.
Crones that participate in a raid seek out illagers and ravagers to throw splash brews of Regeneration of 45 seconds, with a 5% chance of it containing Absorption for 90 seconds, near to them or Instant Health if they have a low health of 4 Hearts or less.
The poison, instant damage, evoker fangs, warden's sonic boom and the Thorns enchantment magical sources are 85% less effective against crones.
A crone pursues the player within 32 blocks and uses brews of varying level in combat, throwing splash brews offensively and drinking brews defensively. On Hard difficulty, the thrown brews have a chance of being gas brews. A crone has an infinite stock of brews.
Crones will throw brews with a variety of effects at their targets, depending on certain conditions surrounding their target.
The lower the crone's health is, the lower their interval of throwing their brews.
A crone may choose to equip and drink a brew each game tick (1⁄20 second) if it is not already drinking a potion. Drinking the brew takes 1.6 seconds, though if it had taken a large amount of damage beforehand, 0.8 seconds, and slows down its moving speed a little. The crone does not attack during this time.
If the crone's target is 64 blocks away, or not within its line of sight, it will teleport near their target every 30 ticks.
If the crone has less than 5 Hearts, they will no longer take damage from cactus, sweet berry bushes and magical sources.
Much like guardians, crones will give 1 Heart of thorn damage to attackers, when attacked with non magical or explosion damage. On hard difficulty, the damage is increased to 2 Hearts of thorn damage.
Crones are neutral towards players wearing both Witch/Crone Hat and Witch Robes, and are capable of being bartered with an emerald. They offer a large selection of items and have a small chance of offering a Forbidden Piece.
Crones are based on Baba Yaga boss from the Witchery mod.
Their spawning method is based on how Baba Yaga can potentially spawn as part of a Crystal Ball event from the mod.
Their application of thorn damage also comes from the boss.
The crone's big skirt was based on how the mod author mistook Baba Yaga's mortar for a big skirt.
Their death sound is a high-pitched Wilhelm scream stock sound.
The mod author mentions that the crones are sisters and/or cousins to the author of the Witches Brew book.
The mod author mentions that the book author would never be fought as he "don't like the idea of a bunch of hooligans harassing dear Ol' Granny!".
It's possible to simulate fighting the 'author' by name tagging a crone with the author's name.
